Second Draught 4.19.2009 Notes
Second Draught came from the idea that we would take what was first drafted and rehash it out for ourselves.
-The Kingdom of Heaven
Recap- What is the gospel? We looked at the parable of the weeds and the parable of the talents. Parable of the weeds essentially say that it is up to the harvester to judge what is and isn’t a good healthy crop. The responsibility isn’t on us to figure out who does and doesn’t truly “live the life.” Parable of the talents say that the kingdom of heaven isn’t a pyramid scheme, it doesn’t deal with money truly. Whatever you do, do it in a nature of kindness, nobility, and compassion.
-The Parable of the Landowner- (Matthew 20:1-16)
What are some things the parable is trying to get across from the beginning?
Salvation, people who got saved early in life, may try to look on there life, and how they lived pure, and then the people that do all the bad stuff and get saved later in life get the same salvation.
The economics of heaven are that the first shall be last and the last first. Equality? You aren’t guaranteed the result that you think you get. The workers that came at the end got the same amount of money as someone who worked all day. “Same amount of grace no matter how much you invest.” Isn’t that unfair? Maybe God says that if that is what you are concerned with that fact then where do your intentions truly lie, the work or the money. God’s economy wasn’t about the coin. It was about the quality that you put into your work.
Why did the landowner go looking for more people? Say he needed a certain amount done by the end of the day, saw it wasn’t going to be done so he got more workers.
It seems that this parable gave hope! Think about how it is saying that you aren’t a “good enough worker” to be picked earlier, but he still got those people at the end of the day and paid them the same.
Who is Christ talking with/telling the story to? Christ seems to be with the 12 because just before Peter was talking about how they left everything to follow Jesus. Peter asked Jesus what he was going to do for them since the gave up everything. Jesus told Peter, “Are you satisfied with what you have been given or are you greedy for more? You agreed to work, but when you found out that I was “fair” you get upset, and you let that love and kindness discount everything else.”
-The Parable of the treasure in the field- (Matthew 13: 44-45)
What is something specific about the kingdom that makes us want to completely sell out for it? And do you see it honestly play out?
It gives us hope, because we see that the man obtained his treasure when he looked for it. Maybe we can see it as selling everything for something small that means so much more to us. Why do we lose sight? What do we need to sell? Possessions, maybe it is just meaning sacrifices. Maybe loyalty over the kingdom, personal desires. With the kingdom there is this essence of kindness and love, ultimate compassion.
Our world is driven by value. Everything is wrapped up in value. What does it offer me and how bad do I need it? What is valuable in the kingdom sense? Love. Why? Because that is what God is. The greatest commandment is, love the lord with all your heart and love your neighbor as yourself. That is what it is about, not literal numbers of followers necessarily. “Pure love empowers the spirit within you to do work. “ Jackie Dukes
John 14:21,23, 15:9. Do you want to know how I truly know if you love me or not? Follow my commands and I will know where your heart lies. Love drives the whole engine and purpose of God’s teachings it seems.

God is always “rocking it” even when we aren’t. God is the driver of everything, and everything in the process. What is the fruit that we are trying to bring forth in our lives? The fruits of the spirit, it says that we can rest on him because he pays complete attention to every little detail, he takes care of us and bigger than that protects thru our growth to maturity. This parable shows the greatness and complete hugeness of God. “Play the role that you are designed to play and God will take care of everything else.”
-The Parable of the Mustard Seed-(Matthew 13)
Something to be said about how the kingdom can start small, but spread like crazy. What is it about the kingdom that allows that to happen? Based on what churches look like and the values of the people in them do we honestly believe that something this small can get so big? It seems that it is kind of basic then we lose sight of it. At the heart of God’s ministry is taking care of the widows, the poor, etc…but it seems that we try to completely try to make it that much more complex. It gets hard because how do we know what success really looks like, because kingdom success can look a lot different then worldly success standards. How are kingdom things multiplied? We have to keep things in perspective by realizing our talents, earlier parable, and be effective in Godly ideals. (Ezekiel 17:23) Part of it maybe that we lose sight of everything due to all of the stuff that we have. “We are eating fat jammed tarts of life!” Jachin Dukes. No matter what the growth is we have to turn it back to the fact that God did it and not ourselves!
What is the hard part about all of this is to dissociate ourselves from the worries of the world. Seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness, and all your needs will be provided.

What is the nature of the gospel? What does Jesus mean by the "kingdom of heaven," and what implications does this place on the gospel?
What is Second Draught and what is the purpose of this blog?
What is Second Draught?
In a nutshell, second draught was designed to talk, discuss, and sometimes debate about topics dealing with Philosphy and Religion, and do so in a safe and comfortable environment! We completely understand and recognize that there will be moments where we agree and moments that we don't, but who are we to judge. Difference of opinion WILL NOT be looked down on.
Where and when is Second Draught?
We hold our meetings at McGuire's Irish Pub in downtown Senoia, GA every third Sunday night at 7:30 PM.
So what is the purpose of this blog?
This blog serves a couple of purposes! Number one is we would like to inform you of up and coming topics that we will discuss. We are doing this because we would hope that if you are coming to the events you would read up a little on these topics. We want our discussions to be as informational, knowledgeable, and thought provoking as possible. Secondly, I will begin to post talk notes that will be taken while we are discussing. Some/most of these talks could go on for so much longer! So maybe we can continue to discuss on here. Thirdly, by me posting all of these things you will be able to look back on prior chats and reflect, or maybe even have a source/reference to answer questions.
On top of this Blog I am also forming a facebook group. If you are on the book please join it!
